When I think of Nana Patekar movies, the first thing that comes to mind is his voice.
That unmistakable dialogue delivery, those intense expressions and the pauses that sometimes said more than words. He could make you laugh, leave you speechless or give you goosebumps, all in a single film.
From Prahaar to Krantiveer, Nana Patekar gave us characters that stayed with us long after the credits rolled.
Here are my five favourite Nana Patekar movies. Not a ranking of his best films, but the ones I remember for their powerful performances, iconic dialogues, beautiful music and the memories attached to them.
1. Prahaar: The Final Attack (1991) – Nana Patekar as Major Pratap Chauhan
Prahaar is one of those Nana Patekar movies where his intensity feels effortless. Playing Major Pratap Chauhan, a disciplined army officer, Nana brings together toughness, courage and emotion. What makes the film even more special is that he directed it himself and underwent military training to prepare for the role.
I still remember those intense training scenes. Major Chauhan was strict, but beneath that tough exterior was a man who deeply cared about his soldiers.
And when the story moves beyond army life to questions of justice, his character becomes even more powerful.
For me, Prahaar showed that Nana didn’t always need loud dialogues to make an impact. Sometimes, his expressions said it all.
Filmfare recognition: The film received a Best Story nomination at the 1992 Filmfare Awards.
2. Krantiveer (1994) – Nana Patekar’s Iconic Dialogues
If we’re talking about the best Nana Patekar dialogues, how can we leave out Krantiveer?
As Pratap Narayan Tilak, Nana takes on corruption, injustice and religious divisions with an intensity that feels incredibly real. His speeches weren’t just powerful because of the writing. It was his anger, conviction and delivery that made them unforgettable.
Remember the scene where he questions Hindu-Muslim divisions by asking people to identify someone’s religion from their blood?
What a powerful message!
And then there’s that legendary dialogue:
“Aa gaye meri maut ka tamasha dekhne?”
Even today, those words instantly bring Nana Patekar’s voice to mind.
No wonder Krantiveer remains one of his most celebrated performances.
Awards: Nana Patekar won the National Film Award and Filmfare Award for Best Actor for Krantiveer.
3. Ghulam-E-Mustafa (1997) – The Gangster with a Softer Side
This one holds a special place in my memories because I watched Ghulam-E-Mustafa in a theatre, and I absolutely loved it!
Nana plays Mustafa, a gangster who can be terrifying one moment and surprisingly emotional the next. His relationship with Kavita, played by Raveena Tandon, reveals a gentler side of his personality. What I loved most was how naturally he balanced anger, humour and vulnerability.
And speaking of Nana Patekar’s unforgettable 90s performances, who can forget his famous monologue from Yeshwant (1997)?
“Ek machhar…”
Just two words, and you can almost hear the entire dialogue!
Of course, that’s from a different film, but it’s a perfect reminder of what made Nana Patekar’s dialogue delivery so iconic.
As for Ghulam-E-Mustafa, watching Nana on the big screen was an experience I still remember fondly.
Some movie memories never fade.
4. Tirangaa (1993) – A Doordarshan Favourite
If you grew up watching Hindi movies on Doordarshan, Tirangaa probably brings back some memories.
It certainly does for me!
Nana Patekar played Inspector Shivajirao Wagle alongside the legendary Raaj Kumar as Brigadier Suryadev Singh. Two actors with such distinctive voices and powerful dialogue delivery sharing the screen! Their confrontations, patriotic spirit and larger-than-life personalities made Tirangaa thoroughly entertaining.
For me, Tirangaa is also about those Doordarshan days when the whole family would gather around the television to watch a movie.
No OTT platforms. No endless scrolling.
Just a good old Hindi film and some wonderful memories.
Filmfare recognition: Nana Patekar received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Tirangaa.
5. Parinda (1989) – Nana Patekar’s Unforgettable Anna Seth
And finally, Parinda. What a performance!
Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, this crime drama featured Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. But Nana Patekar as Anna Seth was unforgettable. His portrayal of a ruthless, unpredictable gangster made him one of the most frightening villains in Hindi cinema.
One moment, he was calm. The next, you had no idea what he might do.
And that’s what made Anna Seth so terrifying.
Nana didn’t always need to shout. Sometimes, his silence was far more unsettling.
The film also gave us beautiful R. D. Burman compositions like Tum Se Milke and Pyar Ke Mod Pe, songs that remain memorable even today.
For me, Parinda is proof of how Nana could make even a villain fascinating to watch.
Awards: Nana Patekar won the National Film Award and Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Parinda.
What Makes These Nana Patekar Movies So Special?
Five films. Five completely different characters.
A disciplined army officer in Prahaar. A fearless voice against injustice in Krantiveer. An emotional gangster in Ghulam-E-Mustafa. A patriotic hero in Tirangaa. And the terrifying Anna Seth in Parinda.
Yet every performance had that unmistakable Nana Patekar touch.
His voice, expressions, sudden bursts of anger, unexpected humour and unforgettable dialogues made him truly one of a kind.
For me, these aren’t just some of the best Nana Patekar movies. They’re films that bring back memories of theatre visits, Doordarshan afternoons and dialogues we still remember decades later.
And that’s why they’ll always be among my personal favourites.
Which Nana Patekar movie is your favourite? Is it one of these five, or is there another performance you still remember? I’d love to know!
