A Memorable Morning in New York
The early hours of September 22, 2024, will forever hold a special place in my heart. The day was when excitement and pride permeated the air as the Indian diaspora gathered to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi to New York. When I arrived at the venue early, there was a steady influx of buses bringing people from across the tri-state area, filling the parking lot of Nassau Coliseum in anticipation. The crowd, beaming with enthusiasm, buzzed with the energy of a festival waiting to unfold.
Cultural Extravaganza: India’s Heritage on Display
As we waited for the event to start officially, the gates opened at 7:30 AM. Long lines of eager attendees stretched far around the stadium. Though we travelled light with no bags or posters, our hearts were heavy with national pride. The scene outside the stadium was nothing short of a cultural celebration. Dance troupes from various U.S. cities performed mesmerising routines to patriotic songs, transforming the area into a mini celebration of India’s diversity. The sounds of Indian folk music, patriotic anthems, and the sight of dancers in traditional attire made it feel like we were transported to the streets of India during Independence Day.
A Sea of Tricolor Inside the Stadium
By 9:30 AM, the stadium was packed with thousands of people waving Indian and American flags, their outfits proudly representing the Indian tricolour & regional traditional dress. The energy inside was electrifying, and the cultural performances continued. Patriotic songs filled the air as many in the queue also sang along. The performances only heightened the excitement, as everyone eagerly awaited the Prime Minister’s arrival.
The Arrival of PM Modi: A Wave of Emotions
At around 12:30 PM local time, the moment we had all been waiting for arrived. The stadium erupted in applause and cheers as Prime Minister Modi entered, waving to the crowd. His charismatic presence filled the space, and with his opening words of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” he had the audience captivated. Modi’s speech was a perfect blend of inspiration, pride, and gratitude. He acknowledged the Indian diaspora as the “brand ambassadors of India,” appreciating the role we play in showcasing India’s talent, culture, and values to the world.
The Five Petals of ‘PUSHP’: A Vision for a Viksit Bharat
One of the most poignant moments of his speech was when he introduced the “PUSHP” model, symbolising India’s future. He explained the five petals of the flower, representing a progressive, unstoppable, spiritual, humanitarian, and prosperous India. It was a clear and powerful message of India’s ambitions on the global stage, and Modi’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (developed India) left a lasting impression on all of us. His words resonated deeply as we all felt the pride of being part of this journey toward India’s bright future.
A Connection Beyond Borders: Modi’s Personal Touch
What stood out the most to me was Modi’s ability to connect with his audience. He praised Indian-origin athletes in the U.S. and recognized the Indian community’s achievements in various fields. His humour and heartfelt stories, such as his meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, were filled with warmth. He emphasised that this moment wasn’t just his, but belonged to every Indian living abroad. His promise to return to a larger venue next time brought joy to everyone in the crowd.
A Day to Remember: Reconnecting with Our Roots
The event concluded around 1:30 PM, but the celebration of identity and culture continued. Thousands of attendees left the stadium with a sense of belonging and unity that transcended borders.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit was more than just a political event; it was a celebration of our connection to India. His words reignited the deep-rooted pride we hold for our homeland. Whether we live in India or abroad, the spirit of India lives within us, and no ocean can separate us from our heritage.
Living for the Nation
Prime Minister Modi ended his speech with a powerful message of service to the nation: “We couldn’t die for the country, but we must live for it.” These words have stayed with me. As someone who attended this historic event, I feel inspired to contribute to the dream of a developed India, no matter where I am in the world.
September 22, 2024, wasn’t just a day to hear a speech; it was a day that brought us closer to our roots, reaffirmed our pride in India’s progress, and reignited our hope for the future.
