There have been countless works of art, be it dramas, books, movies or songs, in honor of our freedom fighters and in celebration of India’s Independence Day since the stroke of midnight hour on 14-15th August, 1947.  Out of these, there are some songs that ignite patriotism within no matter how may times we listen to them! As we celebrate our 78th Independence Day this year, here’s a list of songs that will make your shoulders swell in pride, and leave your eyes wet remembering the sacrifices, songs that carry stories, inspirations, and moments from history that make them truly unforgettable.

1. Aao Bachho Tumhe Dikhaye Jhanki Hindustan Ki  (Jagrity, 1954)

Secularism, historical moments, geographical beauty of India – this song touches upon everything India is made of and every Indian is proud of, instantly instilling pride to the listener even today. This song was written by Kavi Pradeep to foster national pride and historical consciousness among children and youth of India, at a time when India was still defining its national identity.

2. Jis desh mein ganga behti hai (1960)

Raj Kapoor personally worked on this film, bringing to life Vinoba Bhave’s vision- Of transforming dacoits and giving them a new life free of violence through compassion and love. Lyricist Shailendra left no stone unturned in writing the song with the same name. This beautiful song constantly uses the river Ganga as a metaphor for how pure, spiritual and cultural India is, making the listener proud of his country.

3. Mere desh ki Dharti (Upkar, 1967)

Absolutely beautiful lyrics. The way this song describes the beauty of the Indian land, appreciating its soil, and taking pride in the hardwork of its people, heavily inspired by Lal Bahadur Shastri’s slogan – ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’, makes every Indian sway their chin in pride!

4. Ay Mere Watan k Logo

With its perfect background score and soulful voice, this song leaves goosebumps all over, doesn’t it? This song is iconic for so many reasons, including leaving Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru in tears. Lyricist Kavi Pradeep’s heartwrenching lyrics, is a perfect tribute to the martyrs of the Indo-China war of 1962. Lataji’s soulful voice deepens the impact of the lyrics, making every Indian teary eyed even today!

5. Vande Mataram

As India celebrated the golden jubilee of independence from British in 1997, A.R Rahman multiplied every Indian’s patriotism and pride by releasing this beautiful album simultaneously in 28 countries together at midnight of 15th August, 1997! He performed this song live in front of thousands of people at midnight at Vijay Chowk, Delhi, including the then PM IK Gujral, stunning the entire nation with the song’s energetic music, meaningful lyrics and patriotic vibe.

   6. Kar chale hum fida (Haqeeqat, 1964)

Kar Chale Hum Fida, a beautiful song of the film Haqeeqat on the 1962 Indo-China war, is a letter to the soldiers going to the war, their return uncertain. Kaifi Azmi’s soul-stirring lyrics and Chetan Anand’s direction is the ultimate tribute to the nation’s brave soldiers.

A song that’s part of my story!

Lehra do (83 , 2021)

This song holds a special place in my heart! I felt the adrenaline rush and so did the entire stadium of New York when this song played as India beat Pakistan in the T20 World Cup in 2024! We Indians are passionate about cricket and our country- combine the two with upbeat music and meaningful lyrics, and patriotism reaches a new peak.
