India Day Parade 2024

This year’s India Day Parade, held on August 18th, was remarkable. Bollywood star Sonakshi Sinha led the way as the Grand Marshal and her husband Zaheer Iqbal, accompanied her as guest of honor along with Pankaj Tripathi and Manoj Tiwari. Their presence added a sparkle to the event, drawing crowds eager to witness this lively celebration of India’s rich cultural heritage.

A Celebration That Crosses Borders

For the Indian community in the United States, the India Day Parade is more than just a festive event—it’s a way to stay connected to their roots and celebrate their heritage, even far from home. The pride and joy that comes with celebrating India’s independence in a foreign land are deeply felt. The parade is a powerful reminder of their shared identity and cultural heritage, which remains strong despite the distance.

This year’s parade was significant for the Indian-American community. It marked the 42nd annual celebration and reinforced a renewed commitment to preserving and promoting India’s rich cultural heritage in the U.S. The parade was a vibrant mix of traditions, with delicious Indian food, stirring patriotic songs, and colorful performances that brought the streets of New York to life.

A Tribute to Ayodhya: The Ram Temple Float

One of the standout moments of the 2024 parade was the awe-inspiring float dedicated to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. This 18-foot-long, nine-foot-wide, and eight-foot-tall masterpiece, carved from wood and adorned with flowers, depicted the majestic pink sandstone temple built in honour of Lord Ram. Shipped from India, the float symbolized the deep cultural and religious significance of the Ram Temple for Hindus worldwide.

As the float moved down Madison Avenue, the rhythmic beats of traditional Maharashtrian drums filled the air, accompanied by patriotic songs. The sight was both moving and beautiful, representing not only India’s religious diversity but also the unity that ties its people together, regardless of their beliefs.

Showcasing India’s Diversity

The India Day Parade in New York is more than just a celebration of independence; it’s a vibrant showcase of the country’s rich cultural and religious diversity. This year’s parade was a colourful display of floats representing various regions and religions of India, from the northern beauty of Jammu & Kashmir to the southern warmth of Karnataka. Participants from Hazaribagh and Chatra districts of Jharkhand added their unique flair, further enriching the parade’s cultural tapestry.

Floats celebrating Muslim, Christian, Sikh, and other religious communities were also part of the procession, embodying the spirit of unity in diversity that defines India. The parade was a lively celebration of India’s pluralistic society, where different cultures, traditions, and beliefs coexist harmoniously.

A Personal Experience: My First India Day Parade

Walking in the India Day Parade for the first time was an experience I’ll never forget. The energy was contagious, with people dancing, singing, and passionately waving the Indian tricolor. Seeing the Ram Temple float, with its detailed carvings and vibrant colors, left a deep impression on me. It was a moment that connected me to my cultural roots in a powerful way, and I felt truly honored to be part of such a grand celebration.

Being surrounded by fellow Indians, sharing in the joy and pride of our shared heritage, and participating in the festivities was a day filled with happiness, pride, and a deep sense of belonging to my motherland.

Looking back, I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of this fantastic celebration. The India Day Parade in New York is more than just a parade; it celebrates India’s past, present, and future!

Goddess Sita, upon her return to Ayodhya alongside the celebrated King Raja Ram Chandra, observed this sacred Puja. Subsequently, Kunti performed the Puja and, as a divine blessing, gave birth to the brave warrior Surya Putra Karn. These legends not only add to the festival’s allure but also remind us of its timeless importance.

Chhath Puja is unique as it is celebrated twice a year, once in the Chaitra month and then in the Kartik month, specifically on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha. The Kartik month Chhath holds particular significance, as it marks the celebration of the new harvest season and the fruits of hard labor. It’s a time when Hindu Gods and Goddesses rejoice in the devotion and purity offered by their devotees.

As we partake in the rituals of Chhath Puja, we are reminded of the Sun’s impartiality in spreading its life-giving rays to all living and nonliving beings without discrimination. In a similar spirit, Chhath Puja teaches us to shed discrimination and embrace unity. It is a day when we seek blessings from the Sun God with pure hearts, mirroring the Sun’s inclusivity and benevolence.

What Happens During Chhath Puja

Day 1: Nahay Khay (The Holy Bath)

People wake up very early and go to a river or pond to take a unique bath. This bath is not just to clean their bodies but also to clean their spirits. After the bath, devotees prepare a simple yet significant meal called “kaddu-bhat” and offer it to the Sun God. The delicious smell of the food fills the air, and everyone starts to understand how important this day is.

Day 2: Lohanda and Kharna (The Fasting Day)

On the second day, people only eat or drink something during the day. This is a test of their self-control and faith. In the evening, as the sun starts its descent, devotees prepare a humble feast. A warm bowl of “kheer” (rice pudding) and freshly made “roti” (flatbread) become symbols of their endurance and unwavering faith. It’s a way to show how strong their faith is.

Day 3: Sandhya Arghya (The Evening Offering)

On the third day, as the Sun goes down, people gather by the water again. They bring fruits, sugarcane stalks, and thekua (a sweet delicacy), all offered to the Sun God. Everyone stands in the water, facing the setting sun, and prays. They offer gifts to the river, and their prayers go with the flowing water. This is a way to connect with nature and feel closer to God.

Day 4: Usha Arghya (The Morning Offering)

The fourth and final day is extraordinary. People wake up early to welcome the sunrise. As the initial Sunlight gently embraces the horizon, they offer prayers and gifts to the rising Sun. It’s a moment of connection between people and nature. The rituals of Chhath Puja end with this beautiful act, reminding everyone that life is precious and that the Sun is a symbol of hope.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is often referred to as the Festival of Lights for a profound reason—it symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. This theme is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, with stories like the return of Lord Rama after defeating Ravana and the worship of the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. The lighting of diyas are a symbolic representation of dispelling darkness and ignorance from our lives and embracing the light of knowledge and wisdom.

Cultural Unity and Togetherness:

Diwali is a time when people from diverse backgrounds and communities come together to celebrate. It transcends religious and regional boundaries, bringing people closer and fostering a sense of unity. The act of exchanging gifts, visiting friends and family, and sharing meals creates a strong bond of togetherness, spreading love and joy.

A Time for Renewal:

In some parts of India, Diwali marks the beginning of the new year. It is a time for renewal, both spiritually and materially. People clean their homes, buy new clothes, and make resolutions for self-improvement. The tradition of “Shubh Labh” (auspicious gains)  written on doorways signifies the desire for prosperity and well-being.

Sweets, Savories, and Offerings:

One can’t think of Diwali without picturing an array of mouthwatering sweets and savoury delights. From the heavenly taste of motichoor Laddoos to the fragrant and delicate flavours of kaju katli, it’s a feast for the taste buds.  

Beyond their delectable taste and irresistible appeal, they serve a dual purpose during this festive season, for they are not only meant to be savoured but also offered to the gods as a gesture of devotion and gratitude.

Goddess Laxmi is often associated with various symbols and offerings and one of her favourite offerings is Lotus seed also known as Makhana or Fox Nuts.  As the name suggests, Lotus seeds are the seeds of the lotus plant. While there is no specific mythological story that explains why Goddess Lakshmi is particularly fond of makhana (lotus seeds) but Lotus flowers and lotus seeds have a strong association with Goddess Lakshmi. In various depictions of Goddess Lakshmi, she is often shown either sitting on a lotus or holding lotus flowers in her hands. This not only reinforces her connection to the lotus but also underscores the idea that she is the divine embodiment of wealth and purity. 

As I delve into the significance of the lotus seed (makhana) and its connection with Goddess Lakshmi, I find myself transported back to my cherished childhood memories of the delicacy makhana kheer (Lotus seed pudding)

As far back as I can remember, my parents have prepared this exquisite delicacy, rich and creamy, a symbol of the goddess’s benevolence. It’s a tradition that has been passed down through generations, an offering of gratitude and devotion to Goddess Lakshmi.

Each Diwali, as I continue this tradition started by my parents, I feel a deep sense of connection with my roots and my faith. It’s a way to honour the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, to express gratitude for the abundance in our lives, and to seek her continued favour.
