If you grew up in the 90s or watched Doordarshan, you know the magic. Before comedy became loud, there was Flop Show. That quirky title sequence, with its cheeky song belting out “Flop Show, Flop Show, sab kuch flop!” hooked you instantly. It wasn’t just a program; it was a weekly show that turned ordinary frustrations into hilarious relief, reminding us that laughter could fix almost anything. Let’s take a quick walk down memory lane and why this show, despite being decades old, still stands fresh and relevant today!

What Made It Different?

Aired on Doordarshan in 1989, it was created by and starred the legendary Jaspal Bhatti. The show’s title itself was a brilliant pun, flipping ‘hit on its head to embrace life’s everyday “flops.” That unforgettable title song, with its playful lyrics mocking failure, set the tone right away, this was public television at its boldest.

What set it apart? It fearlessly tackled everyday issues like endless queues at government offices, petty corruption and bureaucratic red tape. In the 90s, India was liberalizing, but these systemic quirks lingered. Flop Show held a mirror to them without preaching, it made viewers nod, chuckle, and feel seen. In a time of limited media, it voiced the common man’s struggles, turning frustration into shared joy.

The Humour Stands Out

The show is still refreshing , all thanks to no shouting, no over-the-top slapstick, just subtle satire that lands like a gentle nudge. Jaspal Bhatti’s genius lay in intelligent writing and observational humour, his sketches mimicked real-life absurdities: a clerk demanding bribes for a simple form, or a politician’s empty promises. The punchlines emerged from sharp dialogue and deadpan delivery, rewarding attentive viewers. The comedy was for thinkers, it was thought provoking without fancy sets and vulgar language.

Jaspal and Savita Bhatti’s Dynamic Contribution

What made Flop show a good family show was the way it threw light on issues but in a decent manner,

blending creativity with practicality. At the heart of the show were Jaspal Bhatti, the multifaceted director, writer, and star, and his wife Savita Bhatti, the powerhouse producer. Jaspal brought sketches to life with his everyman persona—rumpled shirts, expressive eyes, and impeccable timing. Together, they created low-budget magic that felt high-impact, inspiring countless comedians.

Why It Still Feels Relevant

Let’s be real, bureaucracy hasn’t vanished from our systems, it’s just gone digital with online applications requiring in-person follow ups and portal crashes. We still have issues like traffic jams, power cuts, and overzealous officials, which makes Flop Show’s sketches feel fresh. Yet, its satire stays positive spotlighting problems to celebrate resilience. In today’s fast world, its simplicity cuts through the noise, proving honest humour bridges generations.

The COVID Re-Telecast Magic

During the 2020 lockdowns, Doordarshan re-telecasted Flop Show, and it went viral. Stuck at home, people loved its light-hearted take on lazy officials and hypochondriac doctors- stories that still felt relevant. Social media buzzed with #FlopShow nostalgia. It became the perfect comfort show, reminding everyone that laughter heals.

A Personal Touch: My Timeless Childhood Favorite

As a kid, I laughed at Flop Show’s sketches, but today I see them differently. The show is still relevant- its humour and lessons on patience remain timeless, reminding us that laughter is truly our best superpower.

Maybe we need that kind of satire again. Sometimes the simplest humour leaves the deepest impact. Flop Show wasn’t loud. It was honest.

Let me know your favourite episode of The Flop Show, the moments you felt ‘this is so relatable!’ or the ones that made you laugh the most.

When Shashi Shanker’s wife saw a whatsapp status of her mother-in-law being missing, Shashi’s heart sank- his mom who was suffering from dementia had vanished into the holy chaos of Banaras, and him living miles away, in the US, just added to the mess. While this story is emotional and heart touching, it is also a reminder of how beautiful family bonds are, and how challenging it is when a close one is suffering from dementia.

The Disappearance & Feelings of Uncertainty

Shashi’s parents had gone to Varanasi for a spiritual pilgrimage, a dream trip for so many. The idea was to experience spirituality as they were growing old. But amid the massive crowds flooding the ghats and temples, his mother slipped away unnoticed, lost in the swirl of devotion.

Shashi’s dad contacted the police and that led to the WhatsApp status. Shashi, oceans away, started to gather as much information as he could, but the restlessness of “What if we don’t find her?” started eating him from inside. The fact that she was suffering from dementia made the whole situation a lot worse. She couldn’t ask for help, she couldn’t do anything.

The Relentless Search Begins

Shashi snapped into action mode from afar, coordinating to and fro, while his dad physically started searching her in and around Banaras- ghats, temples, begging police for CCTV clips, and slapping posters on every wall. But Banaras being a total maze, resulted in days stretching into exhausting nights with little results. As they reached the 5th-6th day, somewhere deep down they started thinking that maybe she was meant to visit the holy place of Banaras and stay there forever.

Locals tried to help, and pitched in here and there, gathering reliable information amid the crowd was difficult. It was a social worker named Aman Kabir who kept telling Shashi, “Mil jaenge. Jaha par bhi honge woh mil jaenge “ and kept them going.

The Miracle Reunion

After gathering minor clues, wandering in the same lanes again and again, and not giving up, finally on Day 9, Shashi found his mother- safe and sound at a simple Hanuman temple across river Ganga. She was safe, fed, and sheltered by total strangers. The small village she had wandered to had welcomed her like one of their own.

When Shashi’s mother spotted him, that reunion hug hit different. She smiled through the fog and in an instant was on her way back home. Nine days of nightmare finally ended with a positive result. Those villagers’ kindness had kept Shashi’s mom safe, and her family’s love and conviction reunited them with each other. But this story throws light on an important issue- in a world where dementia is common, it is necessary to take steps to prevent it, and help people around.

Dementia, the real talk

Women often ignore their own health, ignoring basics like vitamins B12 and D and always put their family first. Skipping fruits, vegetables, exercise? That’s a ticking clock.

If you’ve crossed 40 years of age or know someone who has, encourage them to go for annual health check ups. Encourage your old parents to get themselves checked, to have a balanced diet, exercise and shower them with respect and love- that builds the strongest shield.

Why This Hits Home Today

“My mother did so much for me when I was small, and I couldn’t be there for her when she needed me.” This was what Shashi felt when finding his mother. Doesn’t this hit home? Don’t we all feel the same way?

In our always-on, miles-apart world, loving your parents and caring for them is precious. This story is a reminder that family bonds hold power, and strangers can be kind. This world is full of good vibes if you believe it is.

Do you know anyone who is suffering from dementia? What is the best way to keep them safe?

Do you believe that love has enough power to overcome all odds, including such diseases?

Share your thoughts below!

The AI Impact Summit is happening in India, and this is just the beginning of unlocking the great potential of a life changing technology! There is no doubt that India stands tall as a key player in the global AI ecosystem, boasting the world’s largest engineering talent pool, a thriving startup scene, and rapid digital adoption. These factors position us to lead the AI innovation for emerging markets.

“People, Planet, and Progress”

Set for 16-20 February, 2026 in New Delhi, the summit is anchored in principles of people, plant and progress. It envisions a future where AI advances humanity, fosters inclusive growth, and safeguards our shared planet. The Summit aims to throw light on how AI can advance human life with the vast opportunities and capabilities, and here’s a quick look at all the why and how about the summit.

Why This Summit Matters

Well, let’s just say this event signals massive international buzz around India’s AI scene. With our booming startups and rapid digital uptake, it’s more than tech talk, it’s about sparking economic growth and jobs. We are already growing- India’s own AI platform like BHASHINI, developed to respond to India’s wide linguistic diversity, provides language services such as translation, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, transliteration and document understanding across Indian languages, allowing platforms to add language and voice features without building them from scratch. A summit of this scale simply adds that feather in our cap.

Statistically, it is the first major global AI event hosted in the Global South, amplifying developing nations’ voices in AI governance amid dominance by Western forums.

Global Companies & India

Big players like Google, Adobe, Open AI, FedEx, Qualcomm, NVIDIA and more will boost investment and global partnerships- Through events like UDAAN Global AI Pitch Fest, these firms will scout and fund 500+ Indian startups from Tier 2/3 cities, especially women-led and differently-abled ventures, injecting capital and global market access!

Qualcomm and NVIDIA could commit to chipsets and GPU infrastructure for 570 nationwide AI labs! There’s lot of AI development that India can achieve through this summit that will benefit everyone across the country.

Opportunities for Startups & Founders

Startups and founders at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 gain access to substantial funding, mentorship, global exposure, and deployment pathways through targeted flagship programs. It’s your chance to pitch bold ideas and snag global tech insights!

Startups get face-time with investors and tech moguls through the various flagship programs (AI for ALL, AI by HER, YUVAi, UDAAN) that have a prize pool of Rs 15 lacs to 2 crores.

From mentorship to trend-spotting, this is startup rocket fuel, imagine sealing a partnership that scales your venture overnight- That’s the opportunity at this summit.

Job Creation & Skill Growth

AI isn’t just for coders—it’s birthing roles in product management, design, and expert domains. The India AI Impact Summit 2026 drives job creation and skill growth, focusing on equitable skilling, workforce transitions, and AI literacy to prevent an “AI divide.” Expect fresh jobs emphasizing human creativity over rote tasks.

India’s youth can pivot into these high-demand fields, fueling career leaps. India is already using AI to its advantage, be it agriculture, where startups use AI drones to predict pest outbreaks, boosting yields, or education, where AI tutors via apps like those from Byju’s AI, offer Hindi lessons to tribal kids in Odisha, or small business owners, AI chatbots help Mumbai street vendors optimize inventory.

With summits like this, upskilling programs will explode.

India’s Long-term Advantage

Our young workforce, solid IT backbone, and government pushes like IndiaAI Mission give us an edge. We excel at affordable AI that solves gritty, real-world problems.

From here, India can lead for other emerging markets, exporting scalable solutions globally.

Conclusion

AI adoption via this summit outcomes could add thousands of crores to India’s GDP by enhancing productivity in agriculture, healthcare, and governance, with small and medium enterprises gaining AI tools for scalability. The India AI Impact Summit spotlights our global AI clout, promising jobs, startup booms, and sector leaps. We’re poised to define AI’s future on our terms.

What are your thoughts on India’s AI journey? Drop a comment, share your predictions, or tag a friend/start up you know is attending this summit!

Have you ever found yourself thinking, “I’m okay, but why do I feel so… off?”. Maybe you’re more irritable lately, or you’re waking up exhausted no matter how much you sleep. If you’re in your late 30s, 40s, or 50s, you aren’t just “losing it”, you might be entering a completely normal, yet often misunderstood, phase of life called menopause. Given there is no fixed age to reach the menopause stage, women often don’t even realise what is happening to them and are often simply considered ‘dramatic.’ It’s time (yes!) to have a serious conversation about menopause- to help a woman understand herself better, and her loved ones to be more considerate towards her during this sensitive phase.

With this in mind, the Good Vibe Show invited wellness coach, Swati Singh, to share some eye-opening insights that every woman (and the people who love them!) need to hear. Let’s break down the mystery and talk about how to thrive, not just survive in this phase of life.

What Exactly Is Menopause?

In simple terms, you have officially hit menopause when you haven’t had a period for 12 consecutive months. After that day, everything else is considered “post-menopausal”. During this time, your ovaries stop producing eggs, your fertility ends, and your estrogen levels drop significantly, leading to inflammation throughout your body- from the brain till your toe.

The “Sneaky” Phase: Perimenopause

Where symptoms vary and confusion rises.

This is where most of the confusion happens. Perimenopause is the transition phase before menopause, and it can last anywhere from four months to a staggering ten years. Since the age range is so wide, starting as early as 35 or 40 for some, many women don’t realize their symptoms are hormonal. They are told they are “too young,” which only adds to the frustration. Wait, there is more- the symptoms in every woman are different, and no 2 women will feel the same thing during this phase.

This makes it extremely difficult for women to understand what they are going through and lack of awareness intensifies the confusion.

It’s Way More Than Just Hot Flashes

There is a massive myth that menopause is just about hot flashes. In reality, the drop in estrogen affects your body from “tip to toe”, that impacts everyday life. There is irritation, inflammation, pain & everything else-

The Brain: Anxiety, “brain fog,” confusion, and extreme irritability or rage.

The Body: Joint and muscular pain, fatigue, vertigo, and changes in blood pressure or blood sugar.

The “Unexpected” Changes: Weight gain (especially belly fat), hair loss, and a decrease in sexual desire.

The Relationship Reality Check

Menopause can cause serious disruption both within and outside the body- Did you know that 70% of divorces occur between the ages of 45 and 55? Much of this is due to a lack of awareness about how menopause affects a woman’s behavior and health!

Partners often mistake a woman’s physical pain or irritability for a lack of compatibility. If a husband doesn’t understand that his wife’s sudden rage or sleeplessness is a physiological change, distances grow. The key is for couples to handle this together- talk openly, seek medical advice as a team, and remember that these changes are health-related, not personal.

How to keep your body healthy and safe during these phases?

While menopause is inevitable, suffering is not. Dietary changes during perimenopause and lifestyle changes post menopause can help you stay healthy and active. Here are a few quick ways to keep your body going!

Fix Your Fuel

Perimenopause causes inflammation and during this phase diets play a huge role. Here are a few quick suggestions –

Cutting Sugar and Carbs: Sugar causes inflammation and lack of estrogen makes it worse.

Upping the Protein Intake: You need 20–25g of protein in every meal to fight bone and muscle loss. Add that protein to your every day meal!

Fiber is Key: Increasing your intake of greens and seeds keeps your gut microbiome healthy. A spoonful of Isabgol daily can be a lifesaver for gut health. (Please consult your doctor before starting isabgol in case you already have any gut/digestion issues).

Protect Your Sleep

Sleep is your superpower. If you don’t sleep, your irritability will be sky high. Make it a priority to protect your rest fiercely.

Move and Meditate

Incorporate yoga, meditation, and strength training. These habits keep your brain calm and your bones strong.

We are eventually going to go through these cycles- let’s work towards it and not fear it

As a woman, menopause is natural, and the more you understand how it works, the smoother it is to manage it. We need to stop the shame and talk about it! For too long, our mothers and grandmothers suffered in silence, but today, we have the information and the tools to be prepared and take care of ourselves. If you feel like your body is changing, don’t ignore it. Seek out a doctor who actually understands menopause (as many generalists may not) and get the help you deserve.

Have you or a loved one experienced any of these “sneaky” symptoms? Drop a comment below and share your thoughts! Let’s normalize this conversation together. If you found this helpful, send it to a friend, sister, or mother who might need a little “Good Vibe” boost today!.

For me, Dharmendra ji has always been that first favourite hero — the one who made me smile, blush, laugh, and feel pure joy on screen.

Even today, when his songs play or his scenes flash across the TV, something inside me lights up. It brings back a time when cinema felt simple, beautiful, and full of charm.

A Hero With a Heart as Pure as His Smile

Dharmendra ji was not just handsome — he had a sweetness, a softness that showed even through the camera.
Maybe it was because he came from a small village in Punjab…
Maybe it was his grounded upbringing
Or maybe it was just who he was:
humble, down-to-earth, and deeply rooted.

Even after becoming a superstar, he carried the innocence of someone who had seen simple struggles and simple joys. That’s why when he smiled, it felt real. When he cried, it touched your heart. And when he did comedy, it never felt forced

My Top 5 Favourite Dharmendra Films — The Ones That Live in My Heart

When you love an actor deeply, some of their films become more than just movies — they become memories. Dharmendra ji has given us so many classics, but there are a few that have stayed with me forever. These are the ones I can watch again and again, and still feel the same warmth.

1. Aankhen (1968)

2. Satyakaam (1969)
If there is one film that shows the depth of Dharmendra ji’s acting, it is Satyakaam. His role as Satyapriya — honest, idealistic, and painfully human — is one of his finest and critically acclaimed performances in Hindi cinema.

His chemistry with Sharmila Tagore ji and his timing with the entire cast make this film a treasure. It’s my comfort movie.

4. Aaye Din Bahar Ke (1966)
This film is extra close to my heart — the first Dharmendra movie I ever watched. Maybe that’s why his jodi with Asha Parekh ji feels magical to me even today. Their songs, have stayed with me since childhood.

5. Anupama (1966)
A gentle, poetic film that shows Dharmendra ji’s softer side. As Ashok, he brought calmness and dignity to the screen. His chemistry with Sharmila Tagore ji was understated yet soulful, and the film’s simplicity still feels refreshing. There was a sincerity in his eyes that made you believe everything he said.

And of course…

Veeru of Sholay

How can anyone talk about Dharmendra ji and not mention Veeru?
His naughty charm, his playful innocence, his comic timing — Sholay wouldn’t be the same without him. Whether it’s his banter with Jai, his chemistry with basanti, or the water tank scene… Veeru is unforgettable. Even today, people smile when they think of him. That’s the magic only Dharmendra ji could create.

Why He Remains My Favourite Even Today

Maybe it’s nostalgia…
Maybe it’s the memory of watching his movies growing up…
Or maybe it’s just because heroes like Dharmendra ji come once in a lifetime.

He made movies feel joyful.
He made romance feel innocent.
He made songs feel magical.
And he made us all believe that a good heart always shines through.

I shared the films and the persona of Dharmendra ji that mean the world to me, what about you? Which of his roles made you laugh the hardest? Which song brings back your fondest childhood memory? Was he your first favourite hero too? Share your thoughts, your favourite scenes, or your list of must-watch Dharmendra classics in the comments below. Let’s celebrate the good vibes he created together.

We’ve all been there: that moment in the evening or at midnight, when random food cravings take over your heart and mind. The bag of chips in the vending machine at office whispering sweet, salty promises or your refrigerator at midnight inviting you to take just ‘one-bite’ of that overly sweet dessert. The result? A momentary thrill followed by the classic post-snack “guilt hangover,” leaving us feeling heavy and fueling genuine health issues. Let’s be real: junk food has become a bigger drain on our lives than we want to admit.

But what if you could have the satisfying crunch, the comfort, and zero remorse?

Enter makhana a.k.a fox nut. This humble little snack rising quietly out of India, is the simple, powerful solution we’ve been waiting for. It’s a small food ready to deliver a big impact. A snack that can be enjoyed plain, or with your choice of seasoning- sweet, salty or spicy! But how did makhana become such an important snack in our daily lives?

How a Traditional Treat Became a Hero Snack

For centuries, makhana was happily living its best life as a traditional food staple, particularly enjoyed in Bihar and Eastern India. Fast forward to today, and this unassuming ingredient has gone full global superstar, transforming into the modern “hero snack”.

This isn’t just about a trend, it’s a massive, conscious public shift because makhana solves a fundamental problem- You and I are choosing it because it simply checks all the critical boxes for mindful, 21st-century eating. It’s easy to eat, it’s healthy, it provides a satisfyingly crunchy and comforting texture, and the true test – kids love it thanks to the crunchiness and mild flavour. The best part? It’s genuinely not junk, it’s healthy and nutritious. And that’s exactly why the popularity of makhana continues to grow with each passing day, becoming a staple snack in more and more households – This isn’t some fleeting fad that will vanish next week; it’s a conscious choice people are making for themselves. It is that snack that is cool, healthy and leaves an ‘impression’!

The Benefits People Are Going Gaga Over

Most of the current snack choices are giving you empty calories and the energy crash equivalent of hitting a wall. Makhana though, is wonderfully low calorie, making it a fantastic accomplice for sensible eating habits. It’s packed high in plant protein, giving your body valuable fuel. This protein, combined with beneficial fiber, is great for weight management because it actively helps to keep you full. Think of it as your stomach’s polite, but firm, bouncer.

Beyond the weight goals, makhana is a friend to functional health. It’s considered a good food choice for diabetics, plus it works hard to support heart health and is known for being light on the stomach. To seal the deal, this superfood is also genuinely rich in minerals. In short, it’s delivering a serious nutritional substance, not just air and sodium.

The Crunch-Without-Guilt Guarantee

Haven’t we all googled things like “makhana vs popcorn,” “makhana vs chips,” and “makhana vs fried snacks,” desperately trying to figure out if the healthy alternative is actually worth it? Maybe because we have been wired to believe that the ‘crunchy’ and ‘weightless’ snacks have to be unhealthy.

But the simple truth is, we all want the crunch without the guilt. We crave that satisfying, loud snap of a processed snack, but we deeply resent the high fat content, the ridiculous sodium levels, and the heavy feeling that follows.

Makhana gives you both: the auditory satisfaction of a crispy snack combined with a nutritional profile that actively supports your goals. The shift isn’t just about food, it’s about reclaiming power and choosing to feel capable and strong, not regretful and bloated.

Small Snack That Builds a Big Mindset

The real magic of makhana isn’t just in the minerals; it’s in the mindset it creates. Every time you choose makhana over highly processed options, you are actively building small, healthy habits and making yourself capable of choosing discipline. These tiny victories accumulate, giving you a boost in self-efficacy. Feeling good about these small decisions creates a positive feedback loop that actively leads to a better mood, and keeps you motivated to live a healthier life overall.

It proves that health isn’t about massive, painful overhauls, sometimes, the smallest daily decision is the biggest act of self-care.

How to Start Your Healthy Snacking Journey

Are you ready to invite makhana into your life without causing a panic in your pantry? Here’s how you can keep the transition smooth and encouraging.

Start by keeping a visible, tempting jar of roasted makhana right on your desk, ready for those inevitable 3 PM slump attacks. You don’t need to empty your entire kitchen; just commit to swapping out one snack a day for makhana. If plain makhana sounds too boring for your refined palate, experiment! Try simple seasonings to elevate the experience. It’s a fantastic, easy treat to bring to the office for a healthy break, plus you end up encouraging your colleagues too to switch to a healthier snacking option.

Dear parents, introduce your kids to this healthy alternative early so that they develop a liking towards it, without realising they’re eating something good for them. Don’t forget to share it with your family for guilt-free movie nights or just as a tea-time snack.

You can select different flavours at different times of the day to avoid getting bored of the snack!

The Power of the Small Switch

Makhana is powerful proof that the tiniest adjustments create the most enormous shifts. By making one mindful decision about what fills the gap between meals, you trigger a positive chain reaction. When you snack better, you inevitably feel better. And when you feel better – healthier, sharper, and energized, you are empowered to live better. The ultimate encouragement? You don’t need to change your lifestyle, just your next snack!

Do you enjoy snacking on makhana or are you yet to introduce it into your routine? Let me know in the comments below!

From Khaki to Compassion: The Top Cop Who Launched a Legacy of Care

Mr. Amod Kanth’s life journey is a powerful testament that fighting crime and social justice go hand in hand- a former bureaucrat and Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1974 batch, Mr. Kanth established an illustrious career as an investigator, tackling some of the most difficult and high-profile cases of the time. He gained national and international recognition for his work in combating terrorism, communal forces, economic crimes (like the Hawala and Bank Scam cases), narcotic drugs, and human trafficking. Involved in some sensational cases such as the assassination investigations of Rajiv Gandhi and Lalit Maken, the transistor bomb cases, the Jessica Lal murder, and the famous capture of Charles Sobhraj after his Tihar Jail escape, a story that was later turned into the film ‘Main aur Charles’, Mr. Kanth’s dedication towards improving the lives of underprivileged children is a reminder of how capable humans are to bring about change and protect humanity.

His story is inspiring – While his bravery in the line of duty earned him the President’s Police Medal(s) for Meritorious Service, Distinguished Service, and Gallantry, it also exposed him to cracks in the social system. Multiple investigations he was involved in, highlighted profound vulnerabilities of youth, including cases related to child abuse and juveniles who were caught in petty crimes. And that’s when he realised that many children were falling through the cracks, committing minor offenses, and though the judicial systems had a structure to punish them and ultimately teach them the difference between right and wrong, these children had “no arrangement” for them outside of juvenile homes or jails. And this realization led to something big, something meaningful.

The Moment

The final, tangible catalyst that launched Mr. Kanth’s social work occurred in 1988, years before his retirement, during his active police service. A large slum area in Jahangirpuri, Delhi populated primarily by marginalized families and ragpickers experienced a devastating fire that destroyed thousands of homes. The then Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Air Marshal H.L. Kapoor, asked Mr. Kanth to accompany him to the site. Witnessing the plight of the numerous poor people, especially the children scattered on the street whose homes had been destroyed, Mr. Kanth felt a strong conviction that he “should do something here”. This experience gave rise to his social organization- PRAYAS.

The Integrated Launch: How Prayas Took Flight

It was in this atmosphere of crisis and commitment that Mr. Kanth launched the Prayas JAC Society at Jahangirpuri in November 1988. Demonstrating the immediate integration of his two careers, the launch was founded on an integrated partnership involving not only himself, but critically, the Delhi Police, the Department of Social Work (Delhi University), and Shramik Vidyapeeth (now JSS). PRAYAS started small- with just 25 children- but with a singular vision: to restore the lost childhood of ‘Children in Need of Care and Protection’ and Juveniles/Children in conflict with law.

Mr. Kanth’s unwavering dedication quickly made PRAYAS a model of good practices for pro-poor and child development activities. His dual expertise i.e the authority of a high-ranking officer with the empathy of a social worker allowed him to eventually transition to influential policy roles, even serving as the Team Leader for the National Study on Child Abuse, a report sponsored by the Government of India and UNICEF.

Restoring Childhood: The Broad Impact of Prayas Today

In the 36 years since its founding, Prayas has grown exponentially into an organization of international acclaim. Today, it directly serves an estimated 50,000 marginalized children, youth, and women across the country. To manage this massive scale, Prayas operates a wide network of support, running approximately 252 to 315 Centers/Units in 12 to 13 States/Union Territories. Central to its mission are its physical support systems, including 38 Homes/Shelters for children, the homeless, adults, and women. This extensive operation is supported by a large professional workforce, employing approximately 750 professionals and several hundred volunteers from India and abroad.

The activities undertaken by Prayas are diverse, targeting the intersecting needs of vulnerable populations:

Child Protection and Justice: Prayas runs programs specifically focused on child protection & juvenile justice.

Targeted Vulnerable Groups: They address the needs of Street kids & working Children, providing holistic support through Rescue and Rehabilitation, Alternative Education, and Counseling, Psychosocial, and Legal Support.

Combating Exploitation: Drawing directly on Mr. Kanth’s police experience, a major area of focus is trafficking of children and women. This work was recognized internationally when the U.S. State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP) in 2005 cited Prayas as a model institution for childcare protection, rehabilitation, and social reintegration of trafficking survivors in India.

Residing in the heart of Houston, Texas, Mrs. Ranjana Agarwal’s passion for cooking and desire to serve the needy gave birth to a business that blossomed into an extraordinary vessel for philanthropy. Pickle-MeUp, her pickle selling business, funds various charitable organizations today, that provide artificial limbs and organize free cataract surgeries, making her an unsung hero. Her journey is a testament in how a simple idea, driven by deep passion and faith, can become a powerful force for societal betterment. Far exceeding the usual scope of a home-based enterprise, Ranjana Agarwal has dedicated her life to touching countless lives through generous actions, embodying the true spirit of charity.

Here’s looking at her incredible story, one of destiny, dedication, and unshakeable faith in God, that has helped her reach where she is today.

Charity begins at home and should be kept going

Ranjana Agarwal’s journey toward service was inspired by multiple threads. She has always been motivated by the desire to serve society and a strong sense of spirituality, often facing serious health challenges within her family that led her to dedicate her life to serving Lord Shiva and helping those in need.

Growing up, her family fostered an environment of service; she watched her father constantly helping the poor, and her uncle was actively involved in charitable works through the Lions Club. Her father taught her a crucial lesson: the poor are part of our family, and just as we care for the weak within our own kin, we must support those who are vulnerable in the community.

However, the specific direction of her current work was catalyzed by a profoundly emotional incident. She moved to the US when her husband got a job in the country and just when her pickle business was picking up pace, Ranjana encountered Gayatri Kapoor, a coordinator of another charitable organization, who was deeply saddened by the death of a poor 10-year-old patient. The child had returned home without treatment simply because the family lacked the necessary funds, and subsequently passed away within a month. This tragedy struck Ranjana to her core, leaving her unable to sleep for four days. The idea that a child’s life was lost purely due to poverty haunted her, and she felt an insistent inner voice urging her: “You can do something”. Overwhelmed by this compulsion, she told her husband that she needed to find a way to serve, eventually dedicating herself to the pickle-making venture that she felt God had already placed in front of her.

From Hobby to Humanitarian Aid: How the Business Works

The creation of Pickle-MeUp itself was entirely accidental. While visiting her brother in Dallas, she felt inexplicably drawn to some beautiful green chilies in an Indian store, and since they didn’t consume chillies at home, an idea sparked: she decided to make pickle (achar) and charge a minimum price for it. The response she received was overwhelming; everyone bought the pickles and immediately asked for more, creating the initial spark that led to the start of the business, and setting the base for bigger things that were waiting to happen.

Initially, establishing customer trust and getting the word out required immense effort. To encourage sales, she began making mathri (a famous snack among the Agarwal community) and offered pickle samples alongside. Sales required efforts, owing to the high prices that were driven by good quality and need to fund her charitable initiatives. Ranjana credits the growth of her business largely to word of mouth, with her friends and neighbors providing crucial support since the beginning.

The Impact: Changing Lives Across India

“I don’t want fame, I am just a mediator.” She smiles, saying the only reason she uses her name is to build trust and make people aware the business is genuine. She sees her business not just as a source of income but as a vehicle for charity, believing that God is the true doer.

Wanting more ways to help the needy, she also personally knits thousands of blankets and then donates these blankets, including some to foster care children as Christmas gifts. She is also a great advocate for organ donation believing that the human body should not go to waste after death.

Beyond blankets, the funds raised by Pickle-MeUp support critical, life-saving initiatives:

Mobility and Surgery: She funds the donation of artificial limbs and Jaipur Foot, providing more than 150 such items in one year. Crucially, she finances surgeries for people, often children, suffering from polio or birth defects like twisted feet or fused fingers. These procedures, such as fixing misaligned feet, can cost up to ₹30,000. This aid is vital for the extremely poor—like vegetable vendors earning only ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 a month—who could never afford these necessary medical expenses otherwise.

Health Care: She organizes and funds free cataract surgeries and provides free dialysis for poor kidney patients who require treatment three times a week. She believes that assisting one family member with these costs helps the entire household, allowing them to pay rent, afford school fees, or even celebrate a child’s birthday.

Other Support: She funds the support of blind and orphaned girls. She recently raised ₹5 lakh within 15 to 20 days to cover the initial tests for a 10-12 year old cancer patient, helping save the child’s life. She also supports infrastructure projects, such as building a room and bathroom at a blind school in Patna.

If you believe you can, you will

Ranjana Agarwal’s life demonstrates that success is not measured in profit margins but in the lives uplifted. You can support the business if you are settled in the US, she ships to 40+ states, her page is available on Facebook- the Pickle-MeUp page, and she is available on WhatsApp (287-509-513).

“To think of the underprivileged on special occasions- birthdays, anniversaries, weddings- that’s the least we can do to help the ones in need.” She believes, and how meaningful is that statement.

For decades, many of India’s most skilled professionals have pursued opportunities abroad, often making the life-changing decision to immigrate to the US seeking access to advanced surgery techniques, furthering their medical careers, or simply trying to learn new techniques that were unavailable back home. While these professionals built successful careers—becoming distinguished cardiologists, accomplished surgeons, and successful entrepreneurs- most of them don’t forget their foundation, their homeland, their people. Doctors like Dinesh Ranjan and Avinash Gupta believe that people of India basically funded their education, that’s how their education fees was almost negligible. This deep gratitude, coupled with the desire for the unparalleled satisfaction and happiness that comes from public service, now fuels a powerful movement of diasporic giving, transforming lives back in India. Here’s a quick look at people who’ve moved abroad decades ago yet constantly work towards improving the lives of their fellow Indians back home.

Mohan Nannapaneni: When Strangers Become Family

Mohan Nannapaneni’s journey is a testament to channelling professional success into profound humanitarian service. After completing his civil engineering in India and moving to the US in the early 1990s, he built a successful software company, Sigma Systems Inc. Initially, he used his own personal funding to establish The Friends Foundation in India, which supported students from rural backgrounds.

However, his defining initiative was born from recognizing a crucial gap: the need for support Indians settled abroad required during tragic times, in the absence of family and friends. While serving as president of TANA (Telugu Association of North America), he helped families repatriate mortal remains to India and that’s when he realized there was no dedicated organization for immigrants in these situations. This gave birth to Team Aid in 2017 on the motto: “We help where there is no family support.”

Team Aid acts as an extended family, providing timely intervention for emotional distress due to accidents, death and other tragic events- the motto is to help Indians abroad and their families back home. In addition, it also provides legal support for immigrant students, and mental health aid when required. They have repatriated over 3,000 mortal remains across the globe. This 24/7 service is driven purely by compassion and relies on a global network of over 3,000 selfless volunteers. The organisation continues to grow, as more and more people are recognizing the importance of the support carried out by them.

Dr. Dinesh Ranjan: The Promise of Free Care (Nishulk)

Dr. Dinesh Ranjan’s career began under the rigorous Gurukul system at Netarhat School, Jharkhand, and he moved to the US to learn advance surgery. He eventually became a renowned transplant surgeon in the US who performed the University of Kentucky’s first liver transplant and first pancreas transplant. Upon retirement, he co-founded the PRAN Medical Group in 2019. The name PRAN—Pravasi Alumni Nishulk (Non-Resident Alumni Free)—underscores their core commitment: free medical care for Indians back home. His decision of free medical care was largely fueled by the commercialization of Indian medical establishments, that led to patient distrust and fear of unnecessary costs. PRAN operates health camps in Bihar and Jharkhand, focusing heavily on preventive care, which he feels is largely unavailable, even in urban areas. The initiative targets prevention of four major non-communicable diseases: Heart Disease, Diabetes, Hypertension, and Kidney Disease, During the COVID-19 crisis, PRAN, under Dr. Ranjan’s guidance, rapidly deployed virtual Zoom Clinics (Telehealth), which he noted was one of the first groups to use Telehealth for continuity, treating an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 patients. Dr, Dinesh Ranjan, along with Dr. Avinash and Geeta Gupta, have successfully set up an initiative that continues to improve the lives of thousands in Bihar and Jharkhand, providing them a better quality of life.

Dr. Avinash Gupta: Mobilizing Resources and Education

Dr. Avinash Gupta grew up in a village near Ranchi with no basic facilities like water and electricity, but pursued education diligently to become a distinguished cardiologist in the US. Driven by the memory of receiving nearly free medical education, he founded the Dr. Avinash Gupta Foundation in 2008 to provide scholarships to poor but meritorious students, and eventually co-founded PRAN. His quick instincts have been vital in granting extensive help to people of Bihar and Jharkhand through PRAN- while serving as President of BAJANA (Bihar Jharkhand Association of North America), he secured a major grant from the Bhatia family foundation that allowed PRAN to purchase a Medi Van (a fully-equipped mobile clinic) and two ambulances for use in Patna and Ranchi. Furthermore, Dr. Gupta was a key figure in setting up the Zoom Clinic during the pandemic, mobilizing BJANA volunteers to provide tech support for the virtual consultations. He also served as the President of the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), focusing on supporting the Indian diaspora and enhancing Indo-US relations, and continues to work towards uplifting the lives of Indians, both at home and abroad.

Dr. Geeta Gupta: Community, Culture, and Compassion

Dr. Geeta Gupta, an emergency room physician and co-founder of PRAN, plays a dual role in both humanitarian health services and cultural preservation. Alongside her husband, Dr. Avinash Gupta, she provides free medical care in Bihar and Jharkhand, sometimes visiting Naxal-affected areas where community support is scarce. During the height of COVID-19, she was part of the team that used Telemedicine to treat over 1,000 patients in India. Beyond healthcare, Dr. Gupta is instrumental in fostering community connection in the US, and tries to connect Indian-American children to their heritage by teaching Indian culture and heritage through the Gurukul at the Sri Siddhivinayak Temple in New Jersey. She also supports the Asha Ashram in Ranchi, an organization that cares for orphan children and children rescued from human trafficking or child labor, funding their care and education through donations. PRAN collaborates with Asha to provide on-the-ground support for PRAN’s free medical camps. Dr. Geeta’s compassion for her homeland has enhanced the lives of thousands of children, and is a reminder that distance cannot stop you from expressing your love for your home country.

Your Homeland lives In Your Heart

These remarkable individuals demonstrate that the gratitude and love for your country can be channelised through various positive ways, all ways leading to meaningful changes back home. They are returning to their roots to deliver specialized skills, modern technology, and profound compassion to the country that nurtured them as kids and made them capable individuals.

Inspired by these global lifelines? Share this post to amplify these stories, and explore how you too can follow their clarion call, ensuring that the light of help shines brightly back home.

Parenting looks deceptively simple from the outside. As a spectator, everyone is quick to conclude whether a parent is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ in certain aspects of raising children, but parenting isn’t that easy. Every parent—whether in New York or New Delhi—wants the same big picture: for their child to be happy, safe, and successful. But the way parents go about achieving that dream varies enormously depending on culture, traditions, and even day-to-day lifestyle. The core intention at any time though is always the same – wellbeing of their children.

Two parenting philosophies that are often discussed and compared are Western and Indian styles. On the surface, they seem worlds apart: one appears more individualistic, the other more family-oriented. But when you peel back the layers, both are built on deep love, care, and the desire to prepare children for the real world. Let’s dive into how they differ, how they shape children psychologically, and what makes each style unique in its own right.

The Western Approach: Independence as a Life Skill

If you spend time in Western societies, one of the first things you’ll notice is how early children are encouraged to be independent. Toddlers are taught to sleep in their own rooms, teenagers often get part-time jobs, and by the time they’re 18, moving out of the family home is considered almost a rite of passage.

The Western style sees independence not as a lack of love, but as a sign of trust. Parents want their kids to be decision-makers, to have opinions, and to learn through experience. Mistakes aren’t necessarily viewed as failures, but as stepping stones.

This approach usually fosters strong self-esteem, decision-making abilities, and adaptability. Children raised in such settings tend to value personal boundaries, self-expression, and problem-solving. On the flip side, some may feel pressure to “figure things out” on their own too quickly, leading to stress when they face setbacks without the safety net they’d ideally want.

The Indian Approach: Togetherness as Strength

In Indian households, the vibe is completely different. Family is the core of everything, and parenting naturally reflects that. Children are rarely raised as “individual units” but as parts of a tightly knit community—siblings, grandparents, cousins, and even neighbors often play roles in the child’s upbringing.

Obedience, respect for elders, and academic achievement are given high priority. Many Indian parents are deeply involved in their child’s life choices—what subjects they pick in school, which extracurriculars they join, sometimes even which career path they eventually follow. This doesn’t stem from control as much as it does from a sense of shared responsibility: if the family sacrifices so much for the child’s future, then guiding that path feels natural.

This environment gives children a strong sense of belonging and security. They grow up valuing relationships, empathy, and community. Knowing that there’s a support system behind them makes them resilient in different ways. At the same time, some kids may struggle with carving out their individuality, especially if their personal desires clash with family expectations.

The Role of Discipline

Discipline is one of the clearest contrasts between the two styles.

Western homes often lean toward democratic or negotiation-based discipline. A teenager breaking curfew might face a conversation about responsibility and trust, with punishments like grounding or loss of privileges.

Indian homes, on the other hand, can lean toward authoritative discipline. Respect for elders is non-negotiable, and consequences may be stricter. Even small children are expected to follow routines and rules laid down by parents without much argument.

And while you have probably chosen which is the ‘correct’ method of disciplining kids while reading the above, the truth is there is no right or wrong here. Kids in the Western society may feel more comfortable challenging authority and speaking their minds, while Indian kids often grow up with a deep-rooted respect for hierarchy and structure. Both mindsets have advantages depending on the situation—questioning rules can drive innovation, while respecting them ensures stability.

Education: A Cultural Priority

The emphasis on education in India is humungous, it is considered sacred in India. Parents often see academic success as the ultimate pathway to a secure future, and the pressure to excel is real. Coaching classes, extra tuitions, and high expectations are common, often creating great pressure on the kids. On the plus side, they develop incredible discipline, focus, and resilience when it comes to studying.

Western parents value education too, but they often balance it with extracurriculars and personal interests. A child who wants to pursue art or sports may get as much encouragement as one excelling in math or science, they may grow up with a broader sense of exploration, creativity, and flexibility in career choices.

Freedom vs Guidance

A Western child might choose their career path at 16, they are given the freedom to choose things earlier in life. An Indian child might have their path gently (or not so gently) steered until adulthood.

The result? Western kids often step into adulthood ready to stand alone but may also at times feel ‘lonely.’ Indian kids step in with an army of family backing them, and so they feel protected but at times, constrained.

Feelings and Family Talk

In the West, “Why?” isn’t disrespectful—it’s expected. Kids are encouraged to express opinions, challenge ideas, and talk about feelings.

In Indian culture, respect often trumps open disagreement. Children may not always feel comfortable voicing dissent, but they develop a strong sense of emotional maturity by learning patience, compromise, and adaptability in group dynamics.

How Mental Health Is Viewed

The concept of mental health is openly discussed and understood in the western world, resulting in more acceptance towards depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. Mental health, similar to physical health, has its share of ups and downs, which is understood by parents in the west, providing a smoother environment to their children for healing.

In India, the intention is the same- to provide an environment of healing, but lack of overall awareness and discussions surrounding mental health in the society often leaves parents alarmed and in distress, resulting in constant attention to the mental health problem, that may make their children irritated.

So Who’s Right?

The truth? Both.

Western parenting teaches independence, individuality, and courage. Indian parenting builds belonging, resilience, and community strength. Neither is perfect, neither is flawed. They’re just different roads leading to the same destination: raising loving, capable humans.

And the best part? In today’s world, the lines are blurring. Indian parents are learning the benefits of open conversations, and Western parents are realizing the value of strong family ties. Maybe the future of parenting is a little bit of both—independence with togetherness, freedom with guidance.

At the end of the day, love doesn’t come with a single parenting manual. It comes in many styles, each beautiful in its own way.
